Vegas growing up

aerial of Las Vegas, looking north from the StratosphereIt happens to all of us eventually, each day we get older, and eventually we're old.

As far as U.S. cities go, Vegas is a tender 101 with a lot of maturing to do.

So what's happening as Vegas ages?

Have you ever considered what the Las Vegas Strip looked like in the 70s? It wasn't even in the same place, it was north a bit. That 'Strip' is now Fremont Street and 'The Strip' is now the southern part of Las Vegas Boulevard.

But in not too many more years, there will be a South Strip replete with resort hotel casinos, mid-rise and high-rise condos, and it's own feeling of neighborhood.

Since 1983 Vegas has been growing like a hyperactive teenager. Since we're short on land, we're growing more up than out, although we're still growing out as well (at least until the BLM decides to turn a deaf ear to Vegas' hungry developers).

There are 107 mid- and high-rise condo and condo-hotel projects in the works. That'll bring about 79,000 units to town.

And according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, $31 billion worth of resort expansions are planned through 2009.

So take your pictures of the skyline now 'cause in 3 years it'll look remarkably different.
